Objective:
Students will recognize the connection between addition and subtraction and use these operations to solve problems.

Activity:

• Warm-up Game: Use number cards to create addition problems, and ask students to solve for the missing number (e.g., 7 + __ = 10).
• Example Problem:
  If Sally has 10 apples and gives 4 away, how many does she have left? Can you represent this with both an addition and a subtraction equation?
• Addition: 6 + 4 = 10
• Subtraction: 10 – 4 = 6

Extension Activity:

• Math Riddle: Students work in pairs to write their own addition/subtraction word problems and exchange them for peers to solve.
